One of the 'it' places in Melbourne for quite a while now, eating out at Hardware Societe is more like a cultural event, complete with walking through the Melbourne lane ways and queuing out front.<br />

You will need to be ready to forgo your weight loss program, but who wants to be on a diet, when you can have a fried brioche with lemon curd instead!<br />

For me, it is a bit more than that.<br />

It's Kiev. The old town sitting tall on the steep hills, hugged tightly by the river. In summer, it's narrow streets drenched in heady, sweet lilac, and chestnut blossom, loved generously by the sun. In winter it snows in large flakes, and turns shiny, glim and ever more mysterious in the dark.<br />
<br />
Kiev is grandma's borsch. Flushed pink and pungent, impossible to forget and not to go back too.<br />
<br />
At twenty three, I went through Australian boarder security with two hundred dollars, a suit case, a new husband, and a baby bump. Who needs more to start a new life I say.What I didn't know, is that beetroot soup came too, undeclared. In fact, it was the most important of possessions.<br />
<br />
A lifetime or two decades later it still is. After all, the most important of possessions is who you are.<br />

<b>Method</b><br />
<i>This is a vegetarian option, but you can also use meet or chicken stock.</i><br />
Serves 4-6<br />
<br />
<b>Vegetable stock</b><br />
(makes 2-3 litres)<br />
2 leeks, chopped<br />
2 onions, chopped<br />
4 garlic cloves<br />
fresh herbs<br />
1 lemon, sliced<br />
4 liters of cold water<br />
2 star anise<br />
white wine<br />
salt, pepper<br />
Put everything in a large pot and bild for 30 minutes. Strain through muslin before use.<br />
<br />
<b>Soup</b><br />
300g beetroot, peeled and chopped into sticks<br />
2 tbsp sunflower oil<br />
1 onion, finely chopped<br />
1 carrot, grated<br />
1 small red chili<br />
2-3 garlic gloves<br />
1 tbsp tomato paste<br />
1 capsicum, chopped<br />
2-3 tomato roughly chopped<br />
2 medium potatoes, cut in small cubes<br />
1/2 cabbage, shredded<br />
1 tin red kidney beans, drained and rinsed<br />
3 or 4 pitted prunes<br />
salt and sugar to taste<br />
1/2 bunch of dill, chopped<br />
sour cream to serve<br />
<br />
1. Bring the stock to a simmer. Add the beetroot.<br />
2. After about 10-15 min add potato to the borsch.<br />
3. Heat the sunflower oil in a frying pan. Add the onion, carrot, chili and garlic and cook over a medium heat, stirring until the carrot starts caramelising.<br />
4. Add the capsicum and the tomato paste, cook it out for a few minutes, then add the grated fresh tomato, stir, reduce slightly and add all this to the borsch.
<br />
5. Add the shredded cabbage, the kidney beans and prunes. Cook until the cabbage is tender. So I was having breakfast at 12.30. On a Wednesday.<br />

My God, I love a late breakfast. Is there anything that can be enjoyed before nine in the morning? Well, at least not by me. <br />
<br />
It has to be said, think I am on the road of no return with these sorts of ideas. Sooner or later I will need to think of a cruel reality and go back to the dry toast and a scorching coffee with my eyes closed at 6.30 am. Inevitably. But for now, we are in the 'Walk, Don't Run' kinda mood. It turns out literally, as this is where my 12.30 breakfast was.<br />
<br />
A bit Japanese and a little posh, like most things Armadale, this tiny cafe has everything 'activated' on the menu. The thing in Melbourne these days, together with the cold-pressed juices.<br />
<br />
I never bother with either. It makes me feel good that I order my eggs at a place like this - clean, activated and very cold-pressed. <br />
<br />
My companion, admittedly much trendier than me, ordered a porridge, with quinoa and almond milk, among other things. I am not judging, just hope we can stay friends after that.<br />

In the morning it was very easy to find an excuse to sleep in. It was raining and no reasonable person would want to take themselves to the beach. Even my dog rejected that.<br />

Next on the list was a healthy eating proposition. It had to be Organica, a place whole level up for a nutrition conscious individual. Even reading that menu makes you feel like you've eaten an apple; green, juicy, organic and local.<br />

After a confident espresso order and a mix of all fruity bits juice, things went rapidly downhill.<br />

In an unexpected twist of fate, a women next to me received a superbly fragrant French toast.<br />
<br />
No, of course not I thought to myself; but that's not what I said to the waiter.<br />
<br />
So, here we go. A breakfast of a perfectly healthy juice, and a ridden with guilt, buttery and crisp, covered in berries, rhubarb and maple syrup piece of dainty French toast.<br />

Oh well. Will have a celery stick for lunch. Promise.<br />

Place all ingredients apart from the quinces in an ovenproof pot and bring to the boil.
<br>
Peel, cut and quarter the quinces, remove the cores. Add to you a pot and bring to a simmer. Place in oven until quince are the desired tenderness and colour (between 2 to 3 hours for a ruby colour). Fresh from markets, they'd come in rattan baskets, still holding sun in their burgundy weight.<br>

You'd need to brake the flesh apart and take the stone out; carefully collecting the thick and swe<span style="background-color: white;">et juice</span> for the sauce. You'd shield the cherry in delicate pastry florets, protecting the rest of the sweet berry nectar.<br>

Allowed to eat with my hands, condensed cherry savor would cover my face and drip down my fingers.<br>

That's how I learnt that messy things that happen in life were always for the best.<br>

Pile the flour on a work surface or board. Add the form water little by little, to make a soft dough. Add in olive olive, work together. Place in a bowl and cover with a towel or plastic wrap, so it does not dry out while you work on cherries.</div>

Wash and stone the cherries, reserving the juice for later, it can be used to serve the dish, as it has a lot of beautiful flavor. Mix in the sugar, and taste to see if the sweetness is as you'd like it. You can always add more if your cherries are not too sweet.</div>

Roll out the pastry to about 3mm thick. Use a cup or a glass to cut out the circles, place them separately and cover again, so that they don't dry out.</div>

Place some cherries in the middle of the circle, fold it in half and use your fingers to close the pastry pocket together. It's important to make sure this is properly sealed, so that it does not open when it will be boiled. </div>

I am not against braking the table etiquette now and then, but take the mere fact of open omelette with roasted artichokes! That is a blow to morning eggs de la classique. And how can a proper person be expected to exhibit some table manners when pear and blue cheese are brought into play? The final blow comes with confit tomatoes. I am not even mentioning the prosciutto, lightly grilled for that matter.<br />

I was not alone. My dear friend, a very refined lady, was fronted with baked beans and caramilsed pear combo. <br />
<br />
I present these pictures to testify my case.<br />

In a form of disapproval and left with no choice, we also ate a couple of croissants with extra coffee, and ordered lime, coconut and pistachio balls to go.<br />

The people, naively optimistic and desperate to get a kick out of color-grey-Comi-collage, served this magenta salad as a center piece at any gathering or celebration.<br />

The Empire may be gone, but this souvenir from the Motherland has made it; from the communal flats of Kiev and Moscow to New York, Melbourne and Monte Carlo. Where the people go, Herring in Fur Coat goes too.<br />

You may think your palate is not ready for experiment. But baked beats, mixed with grated waxy potatoes and carrots, boiled eggs and home made mayonnaise on a bed of pickled herring flavored with onion and dill, is a surprisingly delightful entree.<br />

small bowl, mix together the diced herring, chopped dill, diced Spanish onion and
reserved oil. Set aside.</span></li>

It's hard to get any hotter than this split-level space. The appeal is very calculated, and it should be; from striking murals to cold drippers display and phrenology by L.N. Fowler craniums, nothing is left to a chance.<br />
<br />
Same goes for the food and coffee. Bold and exiting, they raise the anti with some unusual brew such as Pour Over and Cold Drip. My slow cooked duck ragu with spiced mixed beans, smoked chorizo, feta, and poached egg was pure melt-in-your-mouth goodness.<br />
<br />
It's not a major thrill to find a good spot in Melbourne these days. In the past few years we have been so completely spoilt for choice. Equally so it is hard to stand out exactly for the same reason. Drugstore Espresso has done exactly that, lucky South Yarra dwellers.<br />

<b>Apple and Blueberry Pancakes - Recipe</b><br />
Whisk 2 eggs, sour cream, milk and sugar together. Add self-raising flower to form a batter. Slice apples into small cubes, add to the mixture along with some blueberries.<br />

Melt some butter in a hot frying pan. Spoon a dollop of the batter to form a pancake. Fry for a couple of minutes and turn on the other side.<br />

I added some rosemary flowers from my garden together with a little bit of pineapple salsa for some extra flavor once the pancakes were ready.<br />

It is not terribly exciting to be a sandwich. Like it or not, but you need to
know your place in the stylish world of delectables.<br />
<br />
You can't compare yourself to the ever popular deserts. These
snobby chocolate types, covered in fresh strawberries won’t even look
your way. You have no chance with fancy salads and hearty soups, they are
allowed to play with ingredients, know so well what's 'in' this season and can make themselves look very handsome.<br />
<br />
It is very hard to get noticed when you are a working guy sandwich. When all
you can have is a simple filing and an even simpler purpose - feed those office
types, rushing about their daily business. They will have their time later,
with sophisticated dinner sorts, but now all they want is a quick bite for lunch. <br />
<br />
I am not being totally honest here. If you are a sandwich from <a href="http://www.earlcanteen.com.au/" target="_blank">Earl
Canteen</a>, made to order, with the choices of roast pumpkin and gorgonzola
piccante, or free-range pork belly, apple, cabbage & fennel, you know that
you've made it. You are on par with the sit down dinners, served at night,
with dim lights and adults only conversations.<br />
<br />
I am one of those selected few, hand made, from <a href="http://www.earlcanteen.com.au/" target="_blank">Earl
Canteen</a>, an
aristocrat of a sandwich.<br />
<br />
I am well aware that I will not even survive past lunch time. But isn't this the point? A life very short, but spectacular, where every moment counts? <br />

I do not have many ambitions or a set path in life to follow. I've always been driven by passion and curiosity, letting in logic and reason only in a road-safety type manner; just to avoid a major collusion when at a fork in the road.</div>

Through all of that I've always had two goals: to see as much of the world as I can and to enjoy the many forms and artistry of cooking.<br />
<br />
A short time ago, while in Daylesford we visited <a href="http://theperfectdrop.weebly.com/" target="_blank">The Perfect Drop</a>. A nourishing meal, created from locally sourced produce, a cosy room, live music. The Perfect Drop was the place where I finally understood that at 45 I will be perfectly happy to walk down the corporate ladder, take a country road and leave my business cards behind. At least for a little while. I, who always agonize about slightest of decisions, was sure of this one. I have decided to take as much time as I need to let myself discover who I really am, travel, cook, blog, and live. <br />
<br />
The moral of the story? I am excited to see where all of the above will take me. I am ready to fail, at least I will know I tried. And, even if you don't need a visit from life altering ideas, do book a table at The Perfect Drop, if only for their char grilled beef eye fillet.<br />

<a href="http://www.grainstore.com.au/" target="_blank">The Grain Store</a>. Brisk walk up to the very top of Flinders Lane. Barn doors, oversized pumpkins and milk jugs. Hello farm boy, you surely do look like a lot of fun!<br />

Saltbush lamb with sweet potato, bok choy and violet mustard, potato gnocchi and Tomme cheese, mushroom taleggio cream, broccoli, brown butter and nigella seeds.<br />

Does this sound like a music score? I was quick to be smitten. If I need an excuse to meet up again, there is also chocolate chip cookies and milk, baked to order; I am saving this for my next visit.<br />

I had a date with the Mexican; I am not an attached woman when it comes to
gastronomy. <br>
<br>
It's hard to know what makes it work sometimes. I tried them all, Mediterranean
- entertaining, but too self absorbed, Asian - far too exotic, French -
definitely some sparks there, but if you've had it once, you will know what its
all about.<br>
<br>
But with the Mexican, connection was instant. Complex but very
relaxed, never lets you in on its secrets. Always makes me want to come back
for more.<br>
<br>
I was back at <a href="http://www.radiomexico.com.au/" target="_blank">Radio Mexico</a>. Funky, zesty, rough at the
edges, street style Mexican, that goes well with a beer. Just how I like it.<br>

I was always attraced to France, the idea of 'the gift of living' which they seem to understand so well. I wanted to take my time and slowly get to know it too. So, I had five weeks, a flight to Paris and a train ticket down south.<br />
<br />
A friend said, take a <a href="http://www.lonelyplanet.com/" target="_blank">Lonely Planet guide</a>, you will need it. Very skeptical, I thought, carrying around that heavy book is not a good idea, I prefer to travel light.<br />
<br />
It is now a year since my trip. I came to France attracted to it, and I am still completely in love.<br />
And as for that book, I used it. It was my guide to the gift of living. <br />
